Steve Kerr Wants Jonathan Kuminga to Reach His Full Potential — With the Warriors or Somewhere Else

Jonathan Kuminga’s recent benching didn’t affect his attitude or effort. During Wednesday’s practice at Chase Center, the Golden State Warriors forward showed strong focus and energy.

“He had a great practice today,” head coach Steve Kerr said. “We talked before practice, he did everything I asked of him, and I was thrilled.”

Kuminga’s Future Uncertain as Trade Window Approaches

Kuminga was removed from the rotation just over five weeks before January 15, the date when he becomes eligible to be traded. He previously signed a two-year, $48.5 million deal in October that includes a team option for the 2026–27 season, giving the Warriors flexibility after difficult offseason negotiations.

Kerr explained he has spoken with Kuminga about the business side of basketball. He understands the situation may be challenging for the young forward.

“My hope for JK is simple — I want him to become the best player he can be, whether that’s here or somewhere else,” Kerr said.

Kuminga’s Season Performance So Far

Kuminga is averaging 12.4 points on 43.8% shooting, 6.4 rebounds, and 2.6 assists this season. He started the first 12 games and performed well early, putting up strong numbers through the first eight games.

However, a stretch of injuries, including bilateral knee tendinitis that sidelined him for seven games, slowed down his momentum. Since returning as a reserve, his production has declined.

Struggles With Fit and Role Continue

Throughout his four-plus seasons with Golden State, Kuminga has faced an inconsistent role. As an explosive athlete in a motion-driven offense, he has struggled at times with shooting, passing consistency, and adapting to the Warriors’ system.

“The combinations and the fit have been an ongoing thing for years,” Kerr admitted. “It’s obvious. I feel for him because his role depends on my decisions and what I want for the team.”

Kerr Talks About NBA Realities

Kerr shared that he’s had honest conversations with Kuminga about the challenges of the NBA.

“It’s a strange business. You fully commit to your team even though they might trade or cut you,” Kerr said. “It’s hard for players to accept. But long-lasting players learn how to deal with it.”

Kerr on Trade Possibilities

Kerr noted that the team doesn’t yet know what will happen with Kuminga or any other player — joking that he would advise the general manager not to trade Stephen Curry.

“As long as JK is with us, my job is to help him play at his highest level so we can win,” Kerr said.

Stephen Curry May Return Friday

Stephen Curry, who has missed the last five games with a left quad contusion, practiced fully on Wednesday. Kerr said he is “day to day” but looking good for a possible return on Friday against the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Draymond Green and Al Horford Injury Updates

Draymond Green missed practice with an excused absence and is expected back Thursday. He has missed the last two games with a right mid-foot sprain.

Al Horford, dealing with sciatica, was a partial participant in practice but will not play Friday. He has missed six of the last seven games. Kerr said Horford needs several full practice days before returning to game action.

Coach Chris DeMarco Leaves for WNBA Opportunity

Warriors assistant coach Chris DeMarco was officially introduced as the new head coach of the WNBA’s New York Liberty. He will stay with Golden State through the end of the month. Kerr said it’s unlikely they will add a new assistant midseason.

“We’re going to miss Chris,” Kerr said. “He’s an incredible coach and an important part of our staff.”

Conclusion

Jonathan Kuminga’s situation with the Warriors remains uncertain as the trade eligibility date approaches. Despite the challenges, head coach Steve Kerr continues to support his development, whether his future is with Golden State or another team. With key players like Stephen Curry and Draymond Green nearing returns, the Warriors hope stability and improved health will help them regain momentum in the coming weeks.
