San Francisco is getting ready for a festive and bright holiday season as local fire stations transform into colorful, decorated winter scenes. The popular firehouse decoration contest is back again this year — and it may even bring some snow to city neighborhoods.
Holiday Contest Returns for Its Sixth Year
The San Francisco Fire Department will celebrate the holidays with its sixth annual decoration contest. Participating stations will hold block parties starting at 6 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 20, giving residents a chance to enjoy lights, music, and community fun.
The contest was revived in 2020 during the pandemic to spread safe, socially distanced cheer. Since then, competition among stations has grown stronger every year.
A Tradition With Deep Local Roots
The firehouse decoration contest first began in 1948. For three years, decorated stations lit up the city, and buses carried children around town to admire the holiday brilliance.
After a San Francisco Chronicle column encouraged a revival in 2020, the tradition returned with 16 stations joining from areas like the Outer Richmond and even the San Francisco International Airport.
Past Winners and Creative Displays
Many of the fire stations known for impressive decorations are returning in 2025. Past winners and finalists include:
- Station 19 (Stonestown area): Used toy soldiers and decorations borrowed from the nearby mall.
- Station 12 (Haight Street): Added a fun Grateful Dead theme.
- Station 19 (Mt. Davidson): Created a glowing winter wonderland with Santa waving from the roof.
Station 34, located at 499 41st Ave., has also been recognized for stunning holiday lights and creative setups.
Even Snow May Make an Appearance
Some stations have created fake snow in the past, while others have gone big — bringing in real snow directly from the Sierra. These snowy scenes have become a highlight for families and children visiting during the holidays.
Prize Money and Winners
A total of $4,000 in prize money has been donated by the San Francisco Fire Credit Union. The winning stations will give the money to the charities of their choice. Decorations used in the displays are paid for by firefighters themselves.
The winners of the 2025 contest will be announced on Dec. 21.
Conclusion
The return of the San Francisco firehouse decoration contest brings joy, creativity, and holiday spirit to neighborhoods across the city. With bright lights, imaginative displays, and even a chance of snow, the event continues to be a beloved local tradition that brings communities together every year.
